In 1992 Smit started working on a mainly vertical series, to avoid to come close to landscapes.
The Cheese & Milk Series arose in anticipation of an exhibition in the former Royal Cheese Factory Eyssen in Alkmaar in 1993. The exhibition CHEESE was the first of two shows organised by De Zes Jaargetijden, an artist collective based in Amsterdam. Alkmaar Noord Holland, where Smit went to school as a teenager is renowned for its cheese market.
In 1993, this installation made in collaboration with Adriaan Rees, was presented in a former lighting columns factory in Hoorn as part of a group show organized by De Zes Jaargetijden. All members of this collective invited a colleague artist for a collaboration
